‘Dowry’ is an illegal act but still in practice. According to Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 definition of dowry is “Any property or valuable security given or agreed to be given either directly or indirectly-
- By one party to marriage to the other party to the marriage or
- By the parents of either party to a marriage or by another person, to either party to the marriage or to any other person.”
As soon as the girl reaches a marriageable age, as set by our society, parents begin counting their cash. If they feel it’s sufficient then the wedding takes place smoothly, if not they will either call off the marriage or resort to other means of raising money. According to me in the game of dowry, the first ball is thrown from girls’ side, for when they meet the boys’ parents they go with the presumption of paying some amount.
What is the point of asking this question?
Aren’t they already giving their girl to them? Even in the 21st century, I read several cases of crimes related to dowry. Newspapers showing images of women burning themselves, hanging from the ceiling fan, brutally beaten by family members and much more. After coercing the bride’s side for dowry and upon squandering it away, they start demanding more.
Is dowry the only reason to get married? Is money more important than having a lifetime partner? There is also another phase of this case which needs to be heard; why women don’t raise their voice in the first place when they are bullied physically, mentally and economically? Why don’t they share their problems easily? Why do they treat their husbands like Ram even if they are behaving like Ravan?
There are laws to protect you but one has to raise one’s voice first. There are many undisclosed cases of dowry. Dowry is transformed into domestic violence in a flick of seconds.
Let’s change the meaning of dowry. If you want to be financially stable, then look for an educated girl who can and is willing to earn that money for you. An educated girl will educate a generation. Instead of looking for a fair complexion and a 5’6” girl, look for someone who can support you financially and socially. Donate your money to the needy and create a beautiful memory.
Let’s take a dowry of blessings, of love, and of affection. If marriage leads to some changes in life it also brings a lot of happiness. Let’s celebrate this major step in our life rather than turning it into a business deal.
